In the first couple of weeks of October, in the high moorland in areas of Scotland, the West Country, and other places where the red deer roam, one of the great spectacles of nature takes place - the red deer rut.

The moorland is filled with the deep-throated sound of the stags roaring out their challenges as they seek to hold their territory and their group of hinds.

There are fierce battles between stags as the newcomers try to take over territories from the holders. Most fights end with the loser fleeing, but terrible wounds can be inflicted by the fearsome antlers, and occasionally a fight will end in death.

The rut lasts only for a couple of weeks, and will take place in any herd of deer, but for me the spectacle is at its most exciting wth the majestic red deer.

Forgot to say, this is a Vue 6 Pro Studio image with Lyne's Poser stags.

What super images Carol. The top one makes me feel quite homesick for Scotland.

Beautiful images, Carol.  Thanks for the story too.  Last fall Jerry got to see a fight between two whitetailed bucks.  He was sooooooo happy to be able to see that.  It was a first in a lifetime for him.

Those are terrific! My grandfather got between a moose and his lady. My grandfather was up a tree for an hour until the moose got tired of hitting the tree.

Very nice Carol.  I love anything with animals, and you do so well at presenting them.
